Xoom – Send money to India

All my online transactions have been through Paypal. But disappointingly, everytime I decide to withdraw, it takes about 15-20 days for me to receive the cheque from Paypal, and another 10-15 days for the money to be deposited to my account as Citibank (Bank partnered with paypal for this) is not available in Goa.

This time, I wanted to withdraw some 1XXX USD from my paypal account. I logged in to paypal and realised that my monthly withdrawal limit showed 0.00 USD from 2,500.00 USD 8O. Uh! Now what was that! So immediately contacted paypal via email. Paypal popular at sucking customer support, I knew I will be made to wait for a week atleast to get a response. So I switched to Google about this issue. Found a post on DP. This limit has been imposed on all Verified Indian Paypal members while most of the accounts with 500.00 USD limit. Ofcourse I could not wait for the issue to be resolved as no one had any idea about it.

Got to know about Xoom.com. A money transfer service that has very low transaction fees. Infact if you get some discount coupons, you can skip almost all of the fees. Xoom has a Paypal Seller Reputation of 26000+. Yes certainly deserves a wow! On DP I got the discount coupon codes for first 2 transactions. Also any amount above 750 USD they do not charge transaction fees. So I could skip all the fees. While 1000 USD is the maximum you can withdraw. Anyways Paypal had restricted my withdrawal limit totally so a 1000 USD would work great anytime.

So I immediately initiated a money transfer request. Impressed with their pickup locations (about 3500 all over India and 13 in Goa. They work with PNB – Punjab National Bank) I chose to proceed with the same. A few hours later I got an email from them that the transaction could not be completed as India to India transfers were not allowed. Sucks! :x This was not mentioned anywhere on their website. I even checked their help section and every page possible. I was just hoping that I don’t lose Paypal transaction fees in this bargain. Which could go as high as about 7%. So I emailed Xoom and they clarified that all the money would be refunded to me in 2-3 days. And they did it in about 30 hrs. Fast! Also they told me that alternatively I can either choose for the cheque to be couriered or directly credited to my account. So I initiated another transfer with the second discount coupon. And within 3 days here I have my cheque right in front of me. They also have a contact number for the Indian customers of Xoom.

For all those who have their money stuck with Paypal please feel free to start XOOMing your money. If you need discount coupons do contact me. Don’t think I will ever use Paypal again to withdraw my money.

    hi there

I was also fed up of long waiting for PayPal’s checks and gave a try to Xoom yesterday using their Direct deposit service. Currently, the status shows Payment has been authorized and I would get the money into my UTI bank in 3 working days!

But did you know what else they told me – you CANNOT initiate more than 12 PayPal transfers in one year because of RBI regulations!

    Hi,

I know many people are using XOOM for transferring money from USA to India. I signed up for a XOOM account, but never used it. XOOM’s exchange rates are much lesser when compared to other money transfer services. For ex, ICICI bank is giving 42.3 Rs per USD where as XOOM is giving 41.59 Rs per USD. So, XOOM is giving 70 paise less in this case. If I transfer 1000USD to India, they are deducting 700 Rs just from the exchange rates itself. I emailed XOOM about the exchange rates, and they replied me saying that it depends on many internal factors (Whatever may be their internal factors, I don’t care anyway).

I will use XOOM when they give a better exchange rate.

    Thanks,
    Balaji.

    =====
    Dear Jinendra,

Thank you for contacting Xoom Customer Service.

Please be informed that there is no limit for receiving the money using
the disbursement method as “Bank Deposit”.

Please let us know if you have any further questions

My Paypal withdrawal limit is 100 dollars! It asks me to get verified to raise this limit. Did you verify yourself by adding a credit card?

  14. Aseem N wrote on June 10th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

@Jinendra – Thanks a lot for the info. Xoom is still the better choice over Paypal. You can get your hard earned money directly into your bank account in just 1-3 working days! Ofcourse as I see presently their conversion rate is a little lower than Paypal and none of those coupons work now :(.

@Amit – Hhm.. well I am not sure about the withdrawal limit for unverified paypal users. But what I am of is that you need to add your credit card to paypal and complete the extended use program to be a verified member and increase your limits. Also you need an International Credit card. The Domestic one (India and Nepal only) wont do.

    Dear Jinendra

I didn’t knew RBI regulations changed in 2 months! Anyways, you should be aware when you withdraw a lot of money using Xoom, you need to pay your tax returns otherwise – samajh jao, Government is very strict nowadays!

But thanks for your support on the 12 restrictions list.

    Contact if interested.

  17. Jinendra wrote on June 14th, 2007 at 2:00 am

@Aseem: yes you are right, what I like is they tell you how much money you will get, I used lot of other companies where we are not how much money they will cut before getting it to you, its really painful, As far as the conversion rates are concern the difference is always around 1 rupee, and I think its fair as far as their network and infrastrecture they provides.

@ SB: Hi, thanks for your comment, well the restriction on pick up the cash if its going straight to bank then its white money and yes, I do pay taxes :) as there is no simple way to get money in.

    Thanks

Rates offered by Xoom.com are low compared to HDFC and ICICI bank. It is 90Paise less than HDFC bank and 65Paise less than ICICI bank. For small transaction I guess it may not matter. However if you are doing big transfer, it matters a lot. I have done a comparative analysis of various services on my blog sendingmoneytoindia.blogspot.com

  20. SB wrote on June 25th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

    @Hitesh

Do you mean WIRE TRANSFER? Yes, ICICI and UTI banks give very excellent rates for Wire transfer but I discourage that method because everytime you have to file a declaration (e.g who sent the money from USA?) – I used wire transfer only once last year and will NEVER use again. It is better to use Xoom or wait for your PayPal check.

    @Tony Jacob

You need to urgently verify your PayPal account using an International credit card only. No debit card please. Use HDFC/Citibank/ICICI/HSBC/International/American Express – basically any card having International logo and Visa/Master Card sign is sufficient for your verification need. PayPal charges you $1.95 for verification and you get a four-digit number in your next credit card statement for completion of verification process. Or you can call your credit card company and request that number by phone.

Do verify as PayPal has a bad track record of terminating unverified accounts without notice. Why take a risk? Besides you cannot send more than $100 and withdraw more than $500 ever, on an unverified account.

    My Worst XOOM experience :P

first transaction, $ 170.0 took only less than 24 hrs and they able to deposit the payments directly on my banks.

2nd transaction: $ 80.0 started last tuesday, Now saturday and they stated that they will be needing 5-6 working days so and also they claimed its only 3 days yesterday and in that case it will be deposited I hope Next Week!

Transaction or payments is from the same guy / client using same Credit Card for payment and XOOM insisted that he is using echeck for payment. Take a look of what they said to me.

I dont have choice, I have to stop my service to my client. I DONT KNOW WHO TO BLAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Dear xxx

Thank you for your contacting Xoom Customer Service regarding your money transfer transaction that was sent via Xoom’s Value Service, otherwise known as eCheck.

Your Xoom eCheck transaction is still in progress. Xoom has requested the funds from your sender’s bank, and while it normally takes an average of five working days for Xoom to receive the money from your account, it can occasionally take longer.

Since your sender paid by eCheck, it takes about five working days for Xoom to actually receive your money. What happens is the funds get pulled from the checking account and then they are cleared by the Federal Reserve Bank. Again this entire procedure takes five working days on average.

It may have seemed that it “cleared” because it was pulled from your sender’s banking account on the same day your sender transacted, but this is standard protocol in issuing an eCheck clearance. Our records show that your eCheck has not yet cleared:

    - Your Xoom Tracking number: X-xxx-xxxx-xxx
    - You sender submitted the transaction on July 02nd, 2007.
    - Today, July 05th, 2007 is the 3rd business day.
    - Thus we anticipate that your eCheck will clear within approximately 2 days.

Once the electronic funds transfer is completed, we will email your sender immediately that we have released the money to our local area disbursement partner and the funds have been made available for the recipient. You may always check the Xoom home page at https://www.xoom.com/static/help-track.html for your up-to-the-minute transaction status.

If you visit our “Help Center”, and then “FAQs”, you can read more about eChecks by visiting us: https://www.xoom.com/static/help-faq.html#206

Also, if you visit our fee calculator, we mention the same information about our Value service: https://www.xoom.com/fees

Moreover the normal processing time for money to be deposited directly to individual bank accounts in the Philippines is typically one (1) to three (3) working days. Hello Smita

Did you use Xoom’s Direct Deposit service? Any other method such as Punjab National Bank demand draft/etc. cannot be used for such a transer. Only direct deposit works for Indian citizens.

That’s how it worked for me last time. I’m not sure if the rules have changed for at least the Direct Deposit service. I had transferred money from my Indian paypal account to my Indian bank account without any problem.

As an alternative, you can transfer the money not to your account but someone in your family i.e. parents bank account.

    Sincerely
    SB

  26. SB wrote on July 21st, 2007 at 3:21 pm

For common information about everybody, I just like to post this email response from a Xoom representative about whether an Indian National can send money from his Indian PayPal account to his Indian bank or not. It should clarify matters.

    Dear SB

Thank you for contacting Xoom Customer Service regarding your question about sending money to a recipient in India.

You can send money to India from ALL countries where major credit cards and PayPal are available. U.S. citizens may also send via electronic debit from a U.S. checking account. You will need to specify the payment method on our website.

In India, Xoom offers convenient pickup services, demand draft deliveries, and deposit into accounts. Pickup services are offered by Punjab National Bank (PNB) and InstantCash. The maximum sending limit we allow for pickup is US $1000 dollars. Deposits into accounts are handled electronically whenever possible. When impossible to electronically deposit, funds are sent to the recipient’s bank using a TPO. For a list of participating banks where deposits are accepted, please click https://www.xoom.com/popupindianbanks (Only THESE banks will accept Xoom transactions).

Moreover, your initial transaction limit is $1,000 per 24 hours period, and $3,000 per 30 day period. Based on your transaction history with Xoom, your limits may be raised in the future. The daily limit is not an arbitrary amount; it is sender specific and based upon many factors and conditions associated with the sender’s account. The sender’s limit will increase as long as they continue to transact with us.

I hope the matters are clear for everybody. I did use Xoom to transfer money before and I’ll continue to do so now,

    hello people,

This has become a good place to discuss about XOOM and PayPal(SUX).
Well, but that is the only easy way to get paid for a odd service from the American clients. Well then Paypal SUX outside USA, and does not have easy access because of our idiotic politics and our government’s laziness and lethargic attitudes.

Ok, I recently did a XOOM transfer (on 21July) and now when I track the details in XOOM site, it says “pending cancellation” credit in process.

    1 What does that mean?
    2. Does anyone know if this is a sure cancellation and my money will come back to my paypal account?
    3) Will I be charged for the $8 paypal transaction fee? what other losses will I incur?

PayPalSux mann, big time! some one please write back here, so that many more people will be benefited.

    thnx,
    Boy

What if i Deny??? Do they will charge the transaction fee/cancellation fee to other person????….Plz let me know. And if i accept, then if i put it in my Indian account. Will it be credited???… Becoz many people say that due to RBI rules, we are still lacking this withdrawal of fund to our Indian account. So if any one has withdrawn to your Indian account. This is the track number for those who want to give: X061816757988312 very common stop sending them money and if they find q must return it to you, return, but … Not very confident, never send high amounts at once and always expect a sum arrive, you then send you another!

I called up xoom.com on 26th Nov and I was told that they will check with local partners. I didnt hear and when I called up on 5th december , they said that they found issue with this transaction with local partner.

So summary is never ever use Xoom. It’s a scam.
