Kyun Bedi-yon se jakada hai Cricket???

Did the title remind you of Mandira Bedi? Hey man, then you are just on the right track! By any chance if you are a die-hard fan of her histrionics in ‘Shanti’ or a huge admirer of her off shoulder designer costumes please move ahead at your own discretion. Don’t blame me later for hurting your sentiments. ;)

All those who follow cricket more than just being a fan, might have already expressed their misery to watch and hear the ‘Extraa’ loquacious Mandira Bedi on the ‘Extraa Innings’ show on SEX MAX (Oops! Sorry!) its… SET MAX . With their new TRP increase formula in play titled ‘Entertainment weds Cricket’, they might have managed to get a mastodonic increase in the number of dumb folks watching their show (if not cricket), but upset the genuine interested. Their hot number for this formula – Mandira Bedi, simply adds misplaced sex appeal to some serious talk on cricket.

Its so over-fatuous to sit in front of your television set and hear to all her pakau-bakwas. She tries desperately to give her ‘expert’ and ‘exclusive’ comments on cricket based on some ‘Gully Cricket’ she once played, again thanks to Max TV for organising this promotional activity featuring her.

So what really is this femme fatale bimbette good at? With due respect to the gender she belongs to, belive me she is good for nothing to be on cricket shows. For a model of her glamour and beauty (ok, kept a little scope for any of her fans to smile if they had skipped para one), she should have been at some beauty peagent contest or may be on the ramp displaying some new Ritu Beri collection. Not here displaying her imbecile cricketing brain and her wrinkle lift creamed skin. ;)

To India, cricket means passion. We do not need an oomph girl Mandira Bedi or a cheese boy Rohit Roy on the sets of cricket discussion. Where we would like to hear some serious talk, match analysis, cricketing strategies and techniques. Not the howling, screaming and nonsense chatter of Mandira Bedi and more of her breed who may be waiting to get introduced, now impressed with their role model. We do not need entertainment to share place with cricket. We do not want to see any unwanted, undesired, unneeded glamour to be pushed upon the cricketing extravaganza. This is clearly not cricket!

For all those who support this new funda of clubbing entertainment with cricket, don’t you find Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan or Harbajan Singh at all entertaining? Do you need such show dolls to interpret cricket in their own dumb lingos?

Mandira Bedi was introduced as a mandate for women in an attempt of popularising cricket amongst the fairer sex. But today with her inviting attires like skin coloured blouses, low-cut necklines, deep curve spaghetti straps and forget not her off shoulder costumes (all worn for making a spectacle of herself) has welcome enough criticism from the women’s domain. Infact during every show of ‘Extraa Innings’ my mom took every possible shot on her so many times, that I realised how much the women were also troubled to see her on screen wearing ‘Extraa’ scissored or to logically say ‘displaced attires’. And that is why this blog post is here.

Its high time that channels become more professional in their sports coverage, rather than chipping in such gimmicks. Before every match they have an astrology session too. How ridiculous! Well I know many cricketers have taken a leap into the entertainment industry. And that’s purely because they also can entertain us. I am sorry, but it just dosnt work the other way round! SEX MAX can’t really make us watch what we don’t want to. (Sorry for the deliberate error this time. I won’t stop titling the channel this until they don’t change the wardrobe of Mandira Bedi if not her ).

I wonder if next is a Yana Gupta covering the Mumbai Bomb Blasts, or a Rakhi Sawant desperately trying to discuss the latest stock market trends! And to all those who just said ‘Why not?’, thanks for reading the article! :)

    Looking forward for more…

hey mann nice take on the issue. ok first of all im not a fan of mandira bedi or of the enteratinment being offered on the show. max have paid a gigantic sum for the icc tv rights. now how do they get it back?? from sponsorships. in order to make a sizeable profit they have to have maximum tv hours so that they can show ads during the program and eran more. hence the extra innings show where it extends for 2 1/2 hours before the match compared to the half or 1 hour we used to have before. now how do u drag a show for that long?? hence the bedi girl and the other tamasha. it may not be very interesting but u have to appreciate the marketing strategy of set max(or watever u wanna call it).
secondly of the clothes she wears, is it something u dont see itherwise?? i mean u would drool over moels walking down the ramp for hours on ftv but have a problem suddenly with her outfits?? the clothes she wears is very commonly worn by most celebs. problem is if she looks horrible but i see u appreciate her looks.
lastly if u have watched the show closely, u would have notice that for abt an hour or half theres not much cricket stuff and the serious stuff really starts abt half hour before where they show all analysis, statistics and stuff. so if u not interested dnt switch on ur tv and watch bedi and get all ur family memebers frustrated. switch on half hour before and enjoy.
ok more lastly. the 7 hours of cricket is untouched. thats no nonsense. its only befor and after the game thats apparently been spoilt. so cudos to max. also she is a host and not an expert and rightly she doesnt act like 1. and thankfully she is not commentating for the match. so i dnt see a problem
(any further debate u r welcome. and seriously im not a bedi fan!!!!)

    Hey!

Wow tumne toh meri mu ki baat chin li….Even i keep commenting on her and rohit roy…Cuz i dont see any cricket being discussed in there but rather some unnecessary talk…..I hope the television channel realizes this soon, that cricket fans need more of a serious talk than this un necessary blaber by mandira bedi and rohit roy…

    Gud luck

    Bingo Boss,
U\’ve hit de ryt note dis time…
Its ridiculous to see cricket being marketed de wrong way, women just cant sell de show(the only way it can be done, is de way u\’ve mentioned it….dats de oommpphhatic way). I guess even Zee sports took a cue frm MAX, n even dey employed a fairer sex to sell de match.

Just have a look at sports on ESPN-STAR SPORTS, dats what i call professional coverage.

I am sorry Maltesh, if you thot I hit the right note by conveying to you that women cant host a cricket show. I didnt mean that. Certainly not!

What I want to say is entertainment should not be stirred up with something already as entertaining as cricket. In this case it happens to come in the form of Mandira Bedi, who comes from the entertainment domain and does not knw anything of cricket. If there was some other lady who played for India even once… it would mean a big welcome!

Do read this: http://www.cricketfundas.com/yextrainngs.html …our dumb doll speaks…Do take it all in a lighter vain. Hehe. :)

uh about the post simply “WONDERFUL” the best uve wriiten after IIT trip………..but i dont think employing MANDIRA isd a folly on the part of SEX MAX guys (oops sorry>>>>>>SET MAX)….see ur language is becoming infectious……the TRP ratings are only increasing and by the demand rule ………the producers hv to show wat the JUNTA wants to see…….so dats it its finally JUNTA ka faisla……..the pendulum will swing in the direction we want it to move……..u stop watching and oomphing over MANDIRA and d extra innings will fade

    Hi Aseem!!
First of all, kudos to you for bringing up this topic, and presenting it in a very balanced fashion. Your views on the topic are very sensible and relevant; Its absolutely true, that the game of cricket does not require the so-called glamour of the likes of Mandira Bedi for its popularity to soar…its already almost reached the stature of the national game of India. However, we should also not forget, that love her or loathe her, one cannot ignore Mandira Bedi…and even though she poses as a bimbette, she has definitely made people sit up and take notice of her. It requires some courage man, to enter an arena which is entirely dominated by men, until all this time!! Agreed that the methods she used were wrong, but don’t you think she paved way for women commentators who were genuinely interested in cricket and cricket only?? I mean if just the uproar among girls that “oh…I can do a much better job than this female!!” can trigger a wave of indian female commentators storming(ok…thats exaggeration….lets use the word seeping) the indian commentary scene..whats wrong with it?? Give it a thought!!

Ofcourse this diagonal thought of mine is nowhere meant to oppose what u have said Aseem…u are absolutely right in whatever u hav said…this is just an attempt to revert to the chauvinist responses that ur blog has received…hehe!!

  10. Aseem N wrote on October 28th, 2006 at 8:05 pm

Hey thanks Amruta… I enjoy more when I see women not disagree with me on this issue. Well i havnt had any chauvinist take on it contrary to the responses my blog has got.

But guess… its not their fault too. Mandira Bedi is all over the women\\\’s posters(even if women care a damn for her) and is supposed to be a (media)mandate for them. Now even if it has worked a “oh… I can do a much better job than this female!!” among girls, I dont see this as the right way. If you got to be successful in life you got to look up, look up to the best…

Why think of jumping over a pit when you can climb mountains!

  11. Amruta wrote on October 30th, 2006 at 1:13 pm

Well well, i never said that u had a chauvinist take on the issue….in fact i said i completely agree with you…
I however disagree on the “looking upto the best” part, coz we havent really got any ‘best’ yet, have we!!
We can look at Mandira’s stint as just a beginning, no doubt a faltering one!! but we learn from mistakes right?? may b we’ll soon have a woman commentator who will break the “bedi-yan” of glamour and concentrate on hard-core cricket only!!
Why think of failures as obstacles when u can use them as stepping stones!! :-)

  12. the devil talks (doke) wrote on November 1st, 2006 at 10:11 am

dude…..nice article….as usual……but this time we ve some diferences here….(very unusual..)
Mandira Bedi…..i wanna get it cleared ….I M NOT HER FAN….no ways…. forget the criket part…even the glamour factor…thier are n no of gals in industry who are hotter than her…..

But the reason why i still see nothing wrong in this (the extra innings) is that …its a change….something diff from what was followed for donkety years(customs of the criket religion..)….and people having issues with changes in traditions is very natural…..(i ve nt come on the criket part yet)…..
i genuinly see no problem with glamour being added to criket……yaar…..you get both (criket n entertaintment simultaniously….sale aur kya chahiye)….
i mean…see when entertaintment was added to news channels…..people liked it…now people don mind seeing news channel for hours n hours because …they get news n majja both…..(although personally i can bear M BEDI commentating rather than listening to gossips on aajtak…other news channels rock..)…
now lets start with the cricket…..

cricket ….even cricket has gone so many changes…..if you are a fan of genuine cricket…you would hate these one dayers..test matches are what cricket is about…talent stratergy..stamina….guts…..
one dayers are only for entertainment…but no one has issues with that…..know why??? people liked the change….entertainment mixed with cricket….
now that 20-20 is picking up…..can you imagine they provide the bats man a mike.. n ask him hows he feeling..n his strtergy while facing the baller taking his run up in front of him……ridicUlous..
BUT…. people are liking the change….they wanned entertaintment….
    what is sports all about…???
its a entertainment industry …where you are emotiuonally attached to a player or a team coz of patriotic emotions…….
so if you gonna get glamour with it……then i m pretty sure FTV loosing TRP preety soon….

EVEN MAX (the channel)means business….you think they are bothered of genuine cricket…itys a money minting show for them…so extracting maximum…..
if sensor board of bolliwood hasnt stopped a mallika sherawat movie….cricket ne kya paap kiya hai..mere bhai…
see had it been that…..gals wearing bold cloths was not existing in indian cinima..or tevevision..then mandira issue was debatable…..
but all this is available on the very next channel…on rather on very that channel…(movies n all..)so whats the big deal about it???
and ranjans points were quit true n practically correct…..
mano ya na mano…this is what THE DEVIL had to say…..
if you ve actuallly read the whole comment…vallore tuka….

Being so much disappointed with the Set Max’s Cricket World Cup 2007 Live covering by the “Item Girl of Cricket”-Mandira Bedi, I searched for the line in Google- “Mandira Bedi: does she know anything about cricket?” And I got your blog and also this one-
    http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/fr/2003/03/07/stories/2003030700150100.htm

Set Max wanna sell their cricket show much better than now? My advice is-bring “new hosts”(!) please, “every new day, a new Item Girl”. Yeah, call Mallika Sherawat or Rakhi Shawant, what makes a difference then?

Now-a-days, are we playing cricket with two extrAA balls (or should I call them Melons!)?. Just check this out-http://www.imagepundit.com/images/kov2n4oejmwgyzqmw0vt.jpg

Let’s forget her clothes and her cricket knowledge too, we all know that she has something to show off. But she alone is making this serious world cup show of set max a joke with her expert(!) cricketic(!) comments although doing a lot of homework.
