Commercial/ising ‘Dada’

With ‘Ooh Aah Ouch’ and out of Cricket to ‘Hu Ha India’ on the screens, Ganguly still seems to have not lost hopes of wearing the country’s colours again. If you have been watching the Champions Trophy, you probably know what I am talking about. A (poignant??) Ganguly asks India in a new Pepsi ad if they have forgotten him. Sitting in the spectator stands of an empty cricket stadium(how sad :( ) this is what Ganguly says while batting (Uh I mean now batting for Pepsi!):

“My name is Saurav Ganguly. I hope you havnt forgotten me.

Whatever happened, why it happened I don’t know. I am practicing hard to come back into the team.

Who knows I might get another chance to swirl my shirt in the air!

In the field or outside the field, I wont keep quiet.

Hu ha India… Aaya India.

For every match of India I am going to cheer them like this and so should you… my team will feel good.

You will listen to your ‘Dada’ right?”

What a classic way of emotional blackmailing! Is this the way by which Ganguly thinks he would be back in the team? A couple of sensitive lines on screen with an intent to gather sympathy, my dear Ganguly… this is no way u gonna bat again for India.

Ofcourse we have not forgotten you… How can we? How can we forget, one of the best cricketing captains of India, one who changed what captaincy is in Indian cricket. How can we forget our Dada whose aggressive attitude on-field was always so exciting to watch. We havnt forgotten you Saurav. And if we havnt then please stop doing such stupid ads, trying to gather sympathy for nothing.

If Ganguly is practicing hard, he should be making his way back soon, not by media-cising(coined a new word lol!) his intentions like this. He may want to swirl his shirt again in the air to thrill millions, to be back to the glory he was at, but speaking the truth, by emotionally influencing people through such supposed to be sensitive and touching commercials, he is only taking down his dignity with him.

As most brands have chosen to downplay their association with Ganguly, Pepsi seems to have found the man at their shoulders. Both having let down millions of people at some point, seem to be desperately trying to leverage from each other. While Coca Cola presenting their all time hero Aamir Khan to do the job, Pepsi has not left any marketing trick in the book to try to do better. With their new catchline ‘Hu Ha India’ to enthrall the Indians before the World Cup fever begins, a Blue Billion website portal and a pleading Ganguly, they seem to be on the right tracks. For all they might have done to get Ganguly to do this, great job done! Though I am not sure if they can shoot up their sales all over India with this, but Bengal for sure ;) (Sorry if I hurt anyone by saying this).

For the cake that Ganguly thinks he has, I feel really sorry for him, for doing such (already termed stupid) ads, like almost begging to be taken back in the team, he has let us down one more time!

Yeah man, I dont know why he’s taken not being on team so hard on himself, he’s turning out to be a bigger loser than I thought he would be.

How many ppl in India actually have the calibre or the dignity to carry out d emotional blaickmail he did…. if u ask me probably very few (may be Tendulkar). Dada’s public image is wht kept him in d team in d first place.Dada’s extra hard practice is not goin to get him back in the team which he rightly deserves…. thanx to the selection board which is one of the most politically influenced body.So be it. This add is wht he needs…and we ought to listen to him on this one… he is truely a leader of indian cricker
so lets once again say it or shout it
    “oh aah India aaya India”

He is only saying what is in the script. Its ridiculous to say its emotional blackmailing. He dont know what makes you think he was begging to be back in the team in that ad.
Yes, Pepsi is trying to use emotions to sell their product, and Ganguly is just their face.

Even if he does bat, it would still be only of the ads length.

  5. Sreejith wrote on October 16th, 2006 at 3:59 pm

Agreed that its emotional blackmailing but as pallab said its the pepsi who asked him to do it.

Ofcourse, they might have offered him good irressistable price and which celebrity would reject offer if they are not “in” anymore ? :P

We should note that when he was taken out of the theme almost whole kolkata fans came out in anger and he was the one who asked them to stop as it was not the right way and we should earn respect and al the crap. .

So bascially he is Nice guy … (out of stadium i.e) :P

In above comment its “team,” instead of theme :P

Chill guys… its not that I am accusing Ganguly and really pissed off with his ad, even though if my blog entry interpretes to be so. I love Dada as much as you guys. To jab koi apna dil dukhata hai, to aur bhi zyada bura lagta hai.

Well its just that I guess there is some balance that every celebrity needs to maintain between commercialising his image and the very himself. I guess the ad of Ganguly dosnt reflect this parity. And pepsi have found their new bakra to market their cola this way.

For all reasons I still firmly believe that this is no way Ganguly can come back in the team. Why he was thrown out was always in the debate and its really sad to see the Bengal Tiger caged this way. But if he has to triumph he need not look upto anybody else, has to only ROARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

I think its one of the best ads i hv seen……….both brands GANGULY and Pepsi hv lost its value due to recent controversies……a nice innovative way to renew the brand image.
but im not sure of one thing…..is Pepsi going to pay Ganguly for this ad or is it going to be the other way round……

  9. Sujay wrote on October 17th, 2006 at 8:37 pm

Hey aseem… u’ve got it completely wrong buddy!!
u say.. he’s trying 2 gather sympathy 4 himself!! but why does he have to?? there r lots of people who r supporting him 2 make a comeback even in a hard time as this! and by people i need not mean people in bengal!
well the motive of the ad i guess is 2 popularise the pepsi motto “OOH AAH INDIA……” (whatever). well its a business of pepsi india co. n their marketting strategy! well with regards 2 dada’s job, i feel he’s there coz of his popularity n the attention that he’s getting these days!
so dude…. these marketting strategies should not be linked with a persons career as a whole coz in that case it would mean a disastrous backdrop 2 ganguly’s image as a whole (which i’m damn sure ganguly would’nt want himself in his wildest dreams… considering the tough time hez going through)

    To Sujay,

You have not got the right spirit of this article. Its actually an eyeopener for us all of how such marketting stratergies hamper the image of so very popular cricketers like ganguly.

Ganguly is not a dumb guy to simply read out from the script he is given. I am sure this adv has upset many others, may be if they visit this blog u can hear them here.

And I dont think Aseem is against Ganguly. His comment very well explains the motive of the article.

    Love
    -ROHIT

  11. Aseem N wrote on October 17th, 2006 at 11:38 pm

    Rightly put Rohit…

Infact for all those who have got it wrong, I think the post heading says it all: “Commercial/ising ‘Dada’”. So it is for you to decide if Dada is going commercial, or big brands like Pepsi are commercialising his image.

If U ask me… I feel its all a case of SYMBIOSIS

  12. Sujay wrote on October 17th, 2006 at 11:42 pm

    To Rohit

buddy… do u feel ganguly is so dumb that he would indulge in such an add after the big controversy he has gone through??? if yes then plzz. refresh ur thinking!
a player has a contract with a company n he has 2 do adds according to the requrements of the company as a whole. But if the comp. asks 4 something which is objectionable 2 the player then the player can reject s well. IN this case, the very fact that ganguly has done such an add.. indicates that he feels that the add is not hampering his image but in fact increasing Pepsi co.’s profits.
So when we interpret this in our fashion… as “ganguly trying to gain sympathy” its totally foolish!
such interpretations r actually the one’s which can harm his image n not some pepsi add.
I m not against aseem’s article in whole but just that i felt he has wrongly interpreted ganguly’s intentions.

hey nice too see so many comments to this post…
i think i know exactly why this is happenning(frm a evolutionay psychologist’s perspective)!!!
PEPSI’s marketing startergy worked..ha ha..ok..i’ll explain..whoever has written against your views..certainly did fall for pepsi’s emotional balckmailing..when they saw the ad ..they did feel for him..but when they read your blog..they (didnt)realised that they been had..so this outburst was just a reaction to justify themselves.in short u caught them getting emotional and they r just denying it.
so chill man….as for my views…i really think he should not try such publicity stunts(especially ven ppl have started accepting this new look indian team)..let d youngsters get a chance..

Good dat he’s not der in de team,
He should have aptly left de captainship, when India lost de World Cup in 03, but den de media n BCCI, elevated him to such a level, dat he coudnt think of cmin down,
now dat he has realised de empty space beneath, obvisouly he wud resort to such low level means of gettin into the team.

Kya bhai??? Ganguly to team mein wapas aa gaya??? ab chappel ko kaun bachayega??? The biggest problem is that these *&###$$% who are now going for Ganguly\’s head used to jump in joy when he was in form and used to hit a six. Its a shame to see such \’girgits\’.

Its a good thing that india has been white washed with distemper in South Africa. Even though being an Indian it feels bad, but people have seen that India can be drubbed in four series (West Indies, Singapore, India and South Africa) and against average teams like West Indies, without having Ganguly in team and with monumental players like Sachin and Dravid and would be Sachins like Suresh Raina and Mohd Kaif.

    ooooooooooooh aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah indiaaaaaaaah

Haha.. girgits… makes me laugh :o Well yes India certainly is a country of extreme emotions. And media gives more air to the fire. If the guys are doing well, media makes them larger than life. If they arnt, they wudnt think twice in joining the agitated cricket fans(politically motivated :x) in pelting stones over the cricketers’ houses. The houses that have been built not for good cricketting performances but thanks to Pepsi, Samsung, LG, Anchor, Khaitan Fans, Tiger Biscuits, Boost, and the list can just go on and on…

I am glad that Ganguly has been given a chance to be back in the team. Yes not very much for a justified performance, but aah bcz for a no-show from the others playing nw. I really hope he can boost the moral of the Indian players. Its just a mental game and some technical areas that they need to work on! Good Luck guys!
