BSNL Broadband now 2Mbps!!!

I could bet this one was a joke anytime, but with the year 2007 already been declared as the ‘Year of Broadband’, there is surely some juice in this news. First got to know from a friend about BSNL’s broadband upgrade to 2Mbps. At first go I didnt believe and thought it was just another rumour. But when I googled, I found a hell lotta news on it (though as usual, no announcement on BSNL’s website). Its been about 10 days that media has covered this news. I gotta accept I am just not into reading news for the past couple of weeks. Also Technorati shows a number of bloggers blogging about it. M late!

Ok so let me not take you for a ride and lets come to the point. So whats there in for us? I called up BSNL and this is the kinda info that their customer service gave me:

  • BSNL will offer on all Home and Business Plans data rates up to 2 Mbps, subject to technical feasibility.
  • The customer wont have to pay any extra charge to BSNL towards the plans or the already existing hardware setup that is capable of providing such speeds.
  • The following offered by BSNL are the new upgraded plans with higher bandwidths also:
Home 250 - 1GB limit, 90 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 500 - 2.5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 1000 - 5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 1800 - 10GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 3300 - 20GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit.
There is no mention of the Home 900 UL plan.
Business 700 - 4GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Business 1200 - 8GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Business 3000 - 20GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit.
Business 5000 - 35GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit.
Business 9000 - 75GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit.
  • This change is with effect from Jan 1, 2007.

Hmm… you must be wondering that BSNL Customer Service guys are good opposed to their poor image. That guy surely had a lot of patience to gimme all this info on phone without getting bugged with my foray of questions at 12:45 AM. Yea I appreciate that. But hello… they are still the very same “We have not been notified yet” guys if you ask them anything even a little out of the way. I still have a number of questions gone unanswered.

The present upload speed limit is 64kbps. Will it be the same or increased? Why there hasnt been any change in the unlimited plan? (Hehe… I know even I could answer that… With unlimited bandwidth @ 2Mbps coming @ just 900Rs a month… people will suck them out dry…!) This is not just it! There a a couple of hiccups more. BSNL says that the 2Mbps speed available is subject to technical feasibility. Hmm.. I asked them what they meant by that. Thank God this BSNL Customer Service guy could tell me something about it. Says: It will totally depend on the telephone exchange of your area. Smaller exchanges which are not capable of handling this speed boost to 2Mbps, wont be able to offer this support. You need to call up the BSNL internet section to know more about your exchange’s speed limits. Speeds could vary from 256kbps to 2Mbps… :( Not fair! I reside in Porvorim. Which is just 4km from Panjim where 2Mbps will be possible. Porvorim it still may not be :(. Also there has not been any change in the free night surfing feature. I think they should have relaxed the timings… 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM sux bigtime for normal working people. Though not nocturnals like me

But in the bigger picture, this is certainly a welcome change and I see India soon reaching their Vision 2010 with this. Provided they upgrade their infrastructure for such changes. Its certainly not upbeat. BSNL even keeps new connection applications pending because their exchanges run out of ports. Uh! I wonder if all this will turn out to be a gimmick with the infrastructure not capable of hosting such big promises. I just hope not!

When I tasted 512kbps on their promotional game plan, it was awesome. 2Mbps should be God like Speed! And it comes for just Rs 250 a month! Anyways, as BSNL’s 900 UL plan subscriber, I have a reason to grumble.. but I know I will anytime prefer even a 128kbps unlimited connection to any plan that has data transfer limits . I just hate them….

I read this a while back. But that’s some more interesting info you’ve given here. What do you think, Will Vasco exchange be able to give 2 mbps ? I hope so!
P.S Both the links to the newspapers go to economic times! Change it!

  3. Aseem N wrote on December 25th, 2006 at 5:54 pm

Thanks Rohit… I made the change :). Well just hope that the bigger exchanges like Vasco and Ponda do get the best speeds. For me I am content with my 900UL plan. But still want to taste the God like speed… This is truely broadband man!

I dont think I will get it over here anytime soon. And also I aint leaving my UL plan.

This is very informative, I have been waiting for it, with this speed, our country will develop very fast.

  7. Chetan wrote on December 26th, 2006 at 8:08 pm

hey, i hav also read the news in The Times of India, BSNL has published as advertisement
AWESOME Guys, but i hope whether this will be available in my city Kurukshetra - 160 km from Delhi???

  8. Aseem N wrote on December 26th, 2006 at 8:34 pm

Hi Chetan.. I think you should call up the BSNL guys to confirm about availability of this service in you area. But if you have 256kbps connection, its most likely that you be upgraded to 2Mbps. Having said this let me repeat what BSNL told me “subject to technical feasibility”. :)

Its a plan to offer this kind of connectivity to even rural areas in India by 2010 where there is no broadband service available at the moment. So I guess your place should be up for this soon, u wont have to wait till 2010 !!!

Hey i have home 3300 plan od of i mbps incresong the limit wont help!!! are they also gonna increase the bandwidth to 8mbps as ADSL can handle upto 8mbs….any news on dat coz if there will be similar sort of speed in every plan it wont work there has to me 8 mbps sumwer in d picture

  11. Jas wrote on December 27th, 2006 at 12:14 pm

This is really great news. So, it means something which i used to download in 2 hrs would reach me in 15 minutes.
That is 13-15 Mb download per minute.
A 700 MB movie can be downloaded in under an hour.
    Awesome!!!

But this is all theory, and i don’t want to loose my sleep over it yet. I am using H900PLUS connection and as per diff blogs on the net, my connection getting converted to a 2 MB line is yet unconfirmed.
Some are saying it will get converted like other limited ones, some aren’t.
    Let’s wait and watch.
But one thing is for sure, if is not going to be upgraded, i won’t part with it. :D

    No need for suspense..

BSNL Chennai has put the revised Tarriff up on their site.
    http://chennai.bsnl.co.in/News/BBSTariff010107.htm

According to it H900 plans will remain unchanged.

As for the 2 mbps Bandwidth.. It looks like 2 mbps is offered only as a ‘burst’ of bandwidth as and when required.
If you make it a habit of saturating your download bandwidth you will be squeesed back to 256 kbps.

  14. Aseem N wrote on December 27th, 2006 at 10:49 pm

Thanks a lot Rahul for the info. Though it might appear to be only a burst to 2Mbps, I have confirmed with the BSNL Technical guys that it is not so. The ‘256kbps/Upto 2Mbps’ is bcz providing such high speeds may not be possible for some exchanges.

And yes.. 900 UL plan remains unchanged… and I dont see an 8Mbps connection being offered in India so soon Aashil :D

  15. Jas wrote on December 28th, 2006 at 1:26 pm

I even went down to BSNL’s office to confirm, and yes, H900UL guys like me won’t be benefited, but i do not see the reason to switch over to a limited plan to get the higher bandwidth, whose practical speed in itself is in gray, rather than black or white.
Although, with timer applications i have, i can download more with a 2 mb/H500 limited connection in a month, than a 256k/H900 UL connection, but i wud prefer to play the waiting game on this.

LMAO @ “no announcement at the BSNL website”! Geez, government websites are just pathetic.

Hmm, well I’m still sceptic about their service and helpline. There are complaints about bandwidth even for 256 and 512 kbps. I’m pretty sure there will be hell a lot of complaints on this one as well.

I’d love a megabit connection, and I’m pretty sure the private providers would be working at it as well. Hopefully, it wouldn’t cost a fortune :-S

  23. vivek wrote on December 30th, 2006 at 9:30 am

hello friends, dont worry about the technical feasibility, bsnl is providing 2Mbps for sure..
I live in pondicherry, and its not a big exchange, but still im getting regular 1.5 mbps download yesterday itself,, even before 2 days to go…

  24. vivek wrote on December 30th, 2006 at 9:48 am

yes i heard, the home 900 UL plan wont be changed..
Thank God, i was planning to change my plan starting this jan..

But now i think 2 mbps limited connection is better than a 256 kbps unlimited connection…

but im beginning to think, in countries like china, the Broadband is rather cheap.. 6 mbps UL for aroung 1000 rs or so.. Y cant BSNL bring it to india now…. (although its too much to ask at this time..) but i hope d limits will be relaxed or atleast the night free hours will be extended…
But for now, all we can do is only to hope and watch..

  25. Jeba wrote on December 31st, 2006 at 10:56 pm

WTF!!! no changes in unlimited plan ?? that sucks.. i have home UL 900

  26. mandar wrote on January 2nd, 2007 at 10:26 pm

This is ridiculous. No speed improvement for 900UL people.
We must sign a big petition for not upgrading 900 UL speed. I have lost trust in BSNL, they provide good things for 30% people and bad news for 70% people.

  27. Genius wrote on January 4th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

BSNL has miserably failed in its promise to provide 2 mbps speed. Come Jan.1, 2007 and the dreaming customers of BSNL woke up to the rude fact that BSNL’s piped dream of upto 2 mbps speed was going to prove a user’s nightmare. Within no time the BSNL infrastructure started showing signs of fatigue and soon the system crumbled down to miserably low speed of 25-35 kbps; a speed slower than even Dial up. The phenomenon soon caught up and the BSNL customer’s around the country saw their bandwidth zoom Southwards instead of North! Till today i.e. four days after the so called start of much hyped BSNL Bonanza of 2 mbps, the speed all over the country hovers around 30 kbps flat.

All queries up to the highest authorities have resulted in a sombre confession that “Yes! there is some problem after the throttle was opened up by Bangalore (Central BB Control center) to increase the speed and the system will take a few days to get mended.”

That means no immediate solution in sight. Clearly BSNL took the extreme step of frog-jumping the speed without augmenting and preparing the current infrastructure. What a foolish thing to do?

As a result BSNL has made a joke of their Communication minister’s promise!Mr. Ddayanidhi Maran must hide his face in shame , soon after he proudly announced the Broadband Bonanza and virtually challenged the ogres like Airtel and Reliance to meet the challenge in 2007. What a challenge indeed!

Mr. Dayanidhi Maran must be a sad man today thanks to his incompetent team in BSNL. The New Year has made BSNL Broadband customers to lose even their existing speed of 256 kbps! Instead of getting an 8 times over speed they are instead 10 times down their original speed to 25-35 kbps.

    What a shame!

  28. Aseem N wrote on January 4th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

Thanks Genius for the info. I have been sulking last few days over the crappy speeds. Seriously my dialup was better! Though some of my frens here are getting speeds of arnd 1Mbps for Rs 250… while my 900UL plan gives me just 25-30Kbps speeds.

Private ISPs wont even care now to compete with BSNL! :(

  29. Dheeraj wrote on January 5th, 2007 at 3:26 am

yes its really a shame i am also not getting the promised 2mbps speed. I am getting even slower speeds now, earlier i used to get 30kB/sec now i only get 4-7kB\sec. It is just so frustrating. I called the customer care and they told me that it was because of the earthquake that hit taiwan and will take 4-5 days to rectify the problem. when i asked him about the 2mbps speed upgrade he told me that he was not aware of such thing. Really bsnl has some really stupid technical staff workin for them, they no nothing about broadband or even internet for that matter. really a shame for bsnl.

  30. Phanindra K wrote on January 5th, 2007 at 10:07 am

I am a resident of Hyderabad, I have been trying to get a BSNL connection for the past 5 months, to no avail. Ever since the Home UL 900 plan appeared, people seem to have rushed in their applications like mad! My local exchange (Musheerabad) says they have reached their current limit and can’t give any more connections in the area.

I thought that was a shame at that time itself. And now they I am desperately waiting to get my hands on a 2mbps connection… but the call never comes!! God knows if and when they will process my application!!

I’ve heard that the Karnataka govt has given a directive for all private broadband providers to upgrade their 256kbps connections to 2mbps too…(http://www.ciol.com/content/news/2007/107010314.asp)

Will this be happening in AP too?? Any info regarding this will be highly appreciated!

    Hello,
i’m using a usual 64kbps unlimited package and considered shifting to data one for a moment. I’m not very sure if i’ld be able to adapt the night hours for free downloads but wanted to ask, did u guys ever exceed the download limit and pay extra almost frequently. Let me know.

  32. Aseem N wrote on January 9th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Hmmm 500 Home plan is fairly good. I had started off with it. But if you are a dwnload freak 900UL plan is the way to go. But 500rs a month shud be fairly suffice and you shudnt cross limits, now that they have increased them.

  33. Moied wrote on January 11th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    Thanks,
Could you explain how do i go about to get the new connection? and do they give u a new cable or use the existing phone line?

  34. Aseem N wrote on January 11th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

They do not give any new cable. You have to use your existing phone line only. Their technical person will come and do all the settings. You need not worry :)

TO WHOM SO EVER THIS MAY CONCERN

The exact words of SMS is as follows:-
“On this auspicious day I pray to god that your children die of the worst cancer”.

This I belive has landed in a cell phone that is with Mr.Pitchumani of the Virugambakkam Exchange.

This is to bring to your notice that an official apology has been given in writing to the local police station addressing the inspector and Mr.Pitchumani.

It was out of my the pain from loosing my job with my employer for reasons that I was not able to have Internet access from home in time.
I regret applying this phone line and broadband with you.
I should have applied with Airtel, where If they did not have the Internet up and running in 24hrs from the order released the concerned official will face internal charges.
Shame on BSNL that they still let loose their employees. If not they would have done their job in time, saving my job and also will never show the guts to take money from my mother after sending me to Remand.

I was put behind bars at the police station. I was made nude and kept in remand for several hours.
It was cleverly during this time the BSNL employees went to my house and installed the phone, threatned my mother saying they will put me in lot of trouble and extorted Rs.700/-

They even adviced my mother to visit the police station and bribe a police man whom they knew so they may release me.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS DAY OR BSNL FOR PUTTING ME IN SUCH AN INSULT.
LUCKILY THE INSPECTOR WHO ARRIVED BY EVENING GOT INVOLVED IN THE CASE AND FOUND OUT THAT THE CASE AGAINST ME WAS A FALSE ALLEGATION AND WARNED BOTH THE SIDES.

YOU MAY PLEASE VERIFY ALL THE DOCUMENTS FROM THE LOCAL POLICE STATION.

SHAME ON YOU BSNL AND ITS CARELESS EMPLOYEES.

PLEASE KEEP THAT RS.700/- WITH YOUR SELF BUY SOME SWEETS TO CELEBRATE MY FIRST EVER LEGAL ARREST.

    Thanks but no thanks.

We are sorry that the installation of the broadband connection could not be done on the same as the landline due to some administrative reasons and the intervening holidays. Arrangements are being made to provide Broadband connection immediately.

In the meantime, on enquiry, we were informed that wantonly or otherwise, you have sent unsavoury SMSs to the mobile number of the staff of our organisation which has caused immense grief and pain to the concerned official and his family. Subject: Complaint against delay in connecting my phone line and broadband

TO WHOM SO EVER THIS MAY CONCERN AT BSNL

I applied for a new broadband connection based on confirmation from local telephone exchange that I will get the connection in two working days.
There is a junction box inside our campus where another 5 new connections can be connected, which again was confirmed by the lineman and Paranthaman.

I applied on : 9th January 2007 and paid Rs. 1900/- as the initial fee.

    Order Number.: 07 N252765 Dated 9th Jan 2007.

The next day Paranthaman from BSNL of Virugambakkam exchange confirmed that the order has reached him and he can do it the same day or next day morning.

I waited on 10th evening and 11th morning.

I still did not get any response.

I tried reaching the following people since 12th Jan 2007 but in vain.
(Probably I should have gone straight to the telephone exchange to meet them…)
    1. Paranthaman - 2377 4646
    2. Pitchumani - 23773000 / 9444979488
    3. Sankaran - 24819000

    None of them responded…

Please let me know whom can I raise a complaint against all these people.

It is because of these people I had to incur some money loss as I was not able to work from home regarding something that must have reached my US offcie on saturday morning.

Had any of these people confirmed that BSNL cannot give connection in time for my broadband, I would have atleast applied with AIRTEL.

    Awaiting your speedy reply..

I don’t really know the is the updgradation happend !!! But after they released the news of upgrading 256kbps to 2mbps ,Now it has become too slow.

  38. hanniball wrote on January 24th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

Secondly dataone customers now connect to same servers irrespective of the scheme they are on. so an ex-2kbps customer is sharing the bandwidth with ex-1mbps customer. Add to this the congestion in the local network and you have surfing speeds of 5-6 kBps.
Lets hope the yarn that Dataone customer care is spinning about natural calamities being the cause for the slowness is true!
Till then in God, we must trust!

Hello, im planning to shift to dataone and I hear these stories of net slowing down for the present users. Could someone confirm this to me??

Dude 2 mbps?? forget all that…those bastards have not yet given me a connection…my application is pending for the past 6 months there…and i think it will take a little longer…Wat a waste!!

my condition is outrageously funny, i waited for 1 year for dataone connection, got the 256kbps 500 plan. Either the net works great or it is a headache. low quality spiltters, numerous copper problems, no technical expertise of the linemen, and no cordination in handling complains, but thats all obvious, its just a government undertaking.

i am a heavy user so after long decided to get the 900 ul plus plan, what a tragedy! the day i got the plan 1 jan, the day itself the plans were revised. call it my own ignorance of latest events or whatever, i was really dissapointed that i will not be getting a (as said) 2 mbps conection.

currently the problems abound with the 900 plan connection as well, frequent discconections, as much as every 10 mins at times. (ip changes and applications are unable to restore work, manual intervention needed)..

it has been great at tmes and misreably poor at others, overall .. its the best deal if you live in place where no other good private servcice exists.

IN CHENNAI FROM FEBRUARY 1ST THEY HAVE MORE THAT 1000 NEW BROADBAND CONNECTIONS PENDING BECAUSE OF HEAVY SHORTAGE AND ALSO PROBLEM WITH ID CREATION AS THEY DON’T HAVE REQUIRED PORTS

Yes, for sure, bsnl has upgraded their current plans. It was a news/ad sometime back on the tv channel. But I don’t think, it will be available for a new subscriber, as they have left no capacity[lol]before starting the service. ;)

I think Mr.Dayanithi Maran is so stupid he must eat shit for breakfast. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that a 500 plan user at 2mbps paying only Rs.500 can download much more without paying extra, than a 900ul user paying Rs.900 can. So what are the braindead bsnl nitwits still thinking about. Cant they see logic? Preference should be given to those who pay more and therefore make ul900 plan 2mbps also.

i am also having the similar problem as a UL-900 user i am not getting 2 mbps?? y this inequality????

I booked for a Broadband connection under he 250 Home Plan of Dataone Broadband thru the web on February 11. Waited till March 11 and then sent a reminder to the BSNL guys. They replied saying that due to the “huge number” of connections applied for, which was “not anticipated by them”, they were unable to provide the new connections, which would take “time”. So technically, they were not yet ready. And they made all these grandiose offers without even anticipating such a flood of bookings!
Did not someone say that it the essence of business is in being able to read a market, and have a vision of the future! Well, the chennai broadband guys certainly dont have that kind of vision stuff and all that. Or else, they would not have jumped for 2 mbps connectivity, without even being technically ready.
And , to cap it all, when I booked through the web, I did not even as much as get a receipt for my booking. I am surprised at how professional Chennai Telephones and in particular, Chennai Broadband Dataone is!

    Hey Guys,

I Surrendered my connection with BSNL and got a VSNL (Tata Indicom unlimited)

TATA gives a true broadband they give the same bandwidth of upload and download. There is no business of one fourth of the download speed for Upload speed, unlike BSNL.

BSNL does not have any downtime. They are up all the time, but what the heck am i supposed to do with a 256kbps download and 50kbps upload. I definetly do a lot of video uploading, update by site regularly and make internet calls.

BSNL 900UL plus is a BIG shit if you do any of these activities. But its the best you can get if you are a regualr home user with alots of download and not upload.

BSNL HAS DONE A GOOD THING FOR THE USERS OF INTERNET SERVICES. THEY HAVE GIVEN THE BEST SPEED OF 2 KBPS AT THE LOWEST RATE IN INDIA AND I AM PROUD OF THE SAME. I THINK IT THE BEST AMOUNGST ALL THE CONNECTIONS SUCH AS VSNL, IKARA,SIFY,ETC.
I AM FROM BARODA, GUJARAT, INDIA.

i cant beleave.. for indians its to high to pay that account
here in philippines 1mbps unlimited and 512UL is only 900 amonth
and india net users have to pay for extended download like

Home 250 - 1GB limit, 90 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 500 - 2.5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 1000 - 5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 1800 - 10GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit.
Home 3300 - 20GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit.

you must choose cheapest one if i were you
try mtnl or other cheap internet or buy server high download and upload limit
    Unlimited
