I agree with you when u say that keeping aside the legality, people did the right thing. Public fury is sometimes the right way to judge the heinousness of the crime, but something worth thinking is, is the general public trustworthy enough to let them handle such verdicts? 'Cause it is the same public who creates an uproar when a Tasleema Nasreen writes a sensitive book like "Lajja", which is nothing but the truth, and yet has to face the wrath of public!! It is the same public that ransacks the sets of the film "Water", when a Deepa Mehta decides to show the world the truth about the widows in Benaras. It is the same public that creates riots when a statue of some well known figure is disfigured by 1 obscure person, and makes several others suffer for no fault of theirs!!
It is very easy to abuse a person already accused and in police custody, 'cause thats when he is helpless. I think not many from this public must have forgotten about the barbaric murder of a call center employee at the Gateway Of India, amidst a huge crowd. But the fact also remains that NO ONE from the same public remembered to do anything to save the girl , or to stop the crime from happening!!
Its not about the legality about public taking law into their own hands(what a filmy phrase...:-)hahahha), but its about their credibilty!
